40 YEARS AGO: Depeche Mode – “Leave In Silence”

“August 16, 1982

DEPECHE MODE’S new single is “Leave In Silence” and “Excerpt From – My Secret Garden.”

Geoff Barton in Sounds writes that, “Leave In Silence’ is overlong, extremely downbeat and could spell the end of chart success for Gahan’s geeks. Seems like the Vincent /Yazoo prophets of doom were right all along.”

Despite the dire prediction the song goes to #18 in the UK, not as high as previous releases, but still a respectable showing.

In an interview with Sounds magazine, the trio of Depeche Mode recall the grim days before they had hit records. “There was a time when we were really desperate. Nobody was interested in us except for this Rastafarian who wanted to turn us into an electronic reggae group. Seriously! It was really weird. He had this plan to take us to Nigeria. The only thing was he wanted us to wear Dr. Who gear, dress up like Daleks or Cybermen. Reckoned they’d love it in Africa!”.
